I had a spare thirty minutes in Holywood and thought I would capture a couple of long exposure photographs of the old Holywood Yacht club. I have been there a number of times before but have never actually seen it at low tide.

It was a disappointing view given my expectation of using the X100s and Lee filters to capture the jetty at its best.

Holywood, Jetty, County Down

I don’t think I have ever actually been able to walk along the Holywood shoreline. You can see what I was expecting to see in this image.

I decided to make the best of a bad situation and headed along the beach in an attempt to grab the jetty at angles that weren’t naturally available. This shot is a long a beach wall towards Belfast harbour. You can see the old wooden jetty on the left of the image.

Belfast Harbour from Holywood

The jetty was lost in the background and there wasn’t enough water near the end of the walkway to make it interesting. I was determined not to be beaten. Holywood is a hard place to get consistent backgrounds that don’t distract from what is being captured. If you are interested in the Holywood area then you may interested in some long exposure images of the Cultra Jetty.

Across the waterway sits Carickfergus and the Kilroot Power station, great locations in themselves but I wanted to try and reduce their impact on the foreground of my long exposure images. (You can see the power station in the image above).

These are all cropped images and don’t do the location justice. You can see these and other long exposure images of the area in the Long Exposure flickr set. If you are interested in the technique of long exposure photography then check out the long exposure ebook.
