Castlerock, County Londonderry

Castlerock

Castlerock is the home of one of the best beaches in Northern Ireland. As you walk along the beach from the barmouth towards the town you can see Mussenden Temple on the far cliff edge.

Castlerock

The old jetty apparently known as Lawson’s jetty it is situated on the bar mouth between Castlerock and Portstewart. It was built approximately two hundred years ago as a means of moving quarried stone into Castlerock village.

The Bar Mouth

Castlerock is situated in the shadow of the Bishop of Derry’s 18th Century (now ruined) palace. The estate was created by Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol who was the Bishop of Derry in the 1780s. Mussenden Temple, with its precarious perch on the basalt cliff edge is one of the most photographed scenes in Ireland.

Lawson Jetty

The main barmouth is also a popular location with walkers and a great opportunity for some long exposure photography.

The Path

The following photo was captured between the shoreline and Lawson’s jetty a much quieter section of the Bann river and bird sanctuary.

River Meets the Sea

Equipped with just the Fujifilm X100s and the Lee Seven5 filter system I precariously balanced my tripods in the rough shoreline along the last stretch of the Bann River before it meets the Atlantic ocean.

Castlerock

For a construction build two hundred years ago it still looks amazingly strong. The sun was setting quickly so I was shoot at f/8, ISO 200 with exposures of 60 – 80 seconds. If you are interested in the technique of long exposure photography then I would recomend checking out the Long Exposure eBook.

The old Jetty

I would have loved to push for some two minute exposures but time wasn’t on my side and in addition the warm night had brought out every biting Midge in the area.
