Dunluce Castle, Long Exposure Photography

Dunluce Castle on Northern Ireland’s Antrim coast is said to be the inspiration for CS Lewis and the royal castle of Cair Paravel. More recently the castle (with a number of other Northern Ireland locations) was featured in the brilliant Game of Thrones television series.

I had a fifteen minute opportunity to capturing the castle during a family visit to the coast. I was only able to capture six images in total so I am considering these photos to be test shots given the extra struggling of capturing during the mid afternoon sun.

Using the Fujifilm X-T1, the 10-24mm lens and the lee filter system I decided to try some long exposure photography.

I was following the technique covered in the long exposure ebook although I do recommend capturing long exposure images in the extreme ends of the day rather during mid afternoon on a sunny day! Manfrotto have a great little golden hour app that highlights the ideal time (in my opinion) for landscape/outdoor photography.

I love using the Fujifilm system for long exposure photography. The 10-24mm is great lens and the lee filter system works well at 13mm-24mm. Be aware that at 10-12/13mm the lens is so wide it causes vignetting with the Lee Filters, 13-24mm and there is no issue at all.

It was interesting to watch two other photographers who arrived around the same time lugging sizeable bags of camera gear. The Fujifilm system meant I was really able to travel light. One body, three lenses and a little travel tripod offered considerable freedom that I had perhaps forgotten to appreciate.

Keep it Clean

It is always very wise to carry a little lens/filter cleaning cloth when venturing out to capture landscape images. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly tiny water specs or dust can find there way to where they are not wanted. In long exposure photography dust specks have more chance of appearing on the final image.

The Location

Dunluce Castle is a busy location not far from the famous Carrick-a-ride rope bride. It is a stunning location which I will revisit in late evening to capture some long exposures in lower light and also some additional sunset images. If you do visit do take care, the (often slippery) rocky path takes you to some extremely deep water and the tide can be unpredictable. Keep one eye on your photography and more importantly the other on your safety.
