Belfast Summer : Belfast in Black and White

Ask anyone from Belfast the first word that comes into their heads when they think of summer 2012 and it is likely to be “rain“.

It has rained non stop for a number of weeks and we have dealt with local flooding, bursting river banks and the cancellation of outdoor activities since Easter.

Today around Belfast it felt like November. People ducked between shops and shelter, we on the other hand decided it was time for a walk around the Cathedral Quarter to visit The MAC and the Oh Yeah Music Centre.

From phenomenal art work in the MAC through to the amazing ASH and Gary Moore displays in the Oh Yeah Music Centre it was great just to have time with the camera and no specific purpose.

We counted half a dozen hen nights coming and going to the Merchant hotel. The point in the experience they actually remember.

Using a prime lens at around 27mm it was great to capture as much of the street as possible while also traveling light.

It was a dreary day, dull and miserably even increasing the ISO to capture as much light as possible did lift the mood of the cold wet cobbles.

Deciding to lift the mood with a trip to the Merchant hotel the cost of afternoon tea had us retreating to the bar area, it was still a great experience.

  1. Umbrella in one hand, camera in the other. Most of the shots are between showers but a good golf umbrella saves the day. I use a Blackrapid strap which also helps.

  2. A different look, rain black and white looks a little like the director’s vision of the movie Seven, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman. Pretty cool.
