Having managed to get my hands on the Canon 70-200 f.2.8 for general sports photography I finally had the chance to put it to the test. It definitely takes a little bit of getting used to but the lens is spectacular, fast, amazing depth of field and good range for general field sports.

This particular photo was taken at the other side of the pitch but still appears to be pretty sharp even in reasonably dull weather. This lens is definitely going to transform the quality of our sports photos lets just hope we can get to a few finals to put it to good use.

  1. It’s a great lens. I love mine, and have got some great pictures from it (http://j.mp/ak9Zxl is at Exeter Chiefs last year, mostly with the 70-200).

  2. I have the Nikon equivalent to this one – a seriously good lens indeed.
Incredible to have 2.8 all the way through the zoom range. Astonishing details in my shots with this lens too, at any aperture. Very pricey, but very good.

Does yours have the IS option too, very useful for some shots.

  3. No IS on this one, it was a really limited budget as the idea is to invest in it as a 5-8 year option for our sports photography, camera club and also some video work believe it or not.

  4. A pro sports photographer once told me to “shoot tight, crop tighter” when it came to sports photos. Depends on the style you’re looking for, I suppose, and it obviously wouldn’t work with the above photo, but generally it’s pretty sound. That and get the ball and faces in shot ;)
