Apparently a red sky at night suggests good weather can be expected the next day. I don’t think I have ever seen a sunset quite as red as the one experienced on the north coast of Northern Ireland.

It is perhaps a cliched series but one that was on my list to capture the next time I was near by. I tried to keep the horizon as central as possible and by using a high small aperture (high f number). make everything from the foreground to the distant vanishing point in focus.

These photos were taken from the beach on Portballintrae at around 10pm. The sunset was stunning and although it passed with remarkable speed the red sky that remained was spectacular enough to bring people out of houses and hotels.

The photos were taken on manual mode so the camera didn’t compensate for the darkening red sky and other than a bit of cropping having seen no real colour processing. The images are as close to what the eye saw as possible.
As for the old saying “A red sky at night…..” well this deep red sky resulted in torrential rain the following day.
I haven’t posted all the photos to flickr but a selection can be found here.
