One of the best ways to get your work out to a wider audience is to enter Photography competitions. It isn’t just about the prizes but they offer an opportunity to have your work seen and critiqued by the professional community.

Luxury Scottish whisky brand, The Macallan, has launched a new photography competition aptly entitled “The Macallan Masters of Photography 2012” and there are some phenomenal prizes including Fujifilm cameras (X-Pro1, X100 and X10) and a photography trip to Scotland are up for grabs.

The concept behind the Masters of Photography Competition is simple. Capture a portrait, think of a ‘Last Word’ to accompany it and upload it to The Macallan website.

Guide

Your portrait can be of anyone, including yourself. Tell your stories whether they make you laugh or cry; they want you to capture the essence of a personality. You can submit as many portraits as you like.

Next ensure you get friends and family to vote for your picture(s). Prizes will be awarded at various stages over the next six months. The grand prize will be awarded by a panel of expert judges from The Royal Photographic Society.

I am excited to be involved with the competition and The Macallan has asked me to take post a few “Last Word” images of my own to use as example pieces. I also felt it is a great opportunity to demonstrate the X-Pro1 camera is just as versatile for portraits as it is for long exposure landscapes.

Example I(Top) : Deliberation

For the introductory image of Kyle John Suckling my “last Word” has to be “Deliberation“. When you enter ask friends and family to think of the first word that enters their head when they view the image.

Example II: Patience

X-Pro1 Flixelpix

This image was shot in an old red telephone box, I was trying to create a sense that the subject was trying to make contact after a considerably amount of time. I have entitled the last word on this photo “Patience“.

Example III : Maturity

X-Pro1 Portrait

The Final Word :”Maturity” as I think fits nicely with the concept of quality whiskey. (The black and white process in this image was created using my Mono for X-Pro1 preset).
